The Facts - Cigarette Butts

Cigarette butt waste isn't just litter!

Cigarette butt waste damages habitat, landscapes and ecosystems; ignites destructive, deadly fires; poisons wildlife and children; consumes tax dollars for cleanup and disposal, and lasts forever!

4.5 trillion butts littered each year!

Cigarette butts or filters are the most littered item on the planet. An estimated 5.6 trillion cigarettes are smoked each year, out of which two thirds are improperly disposed of. That’s 4.5 trillion butts each year. Since the 1980s, cigarette butts have accounted for 30% to 40% of all litter found in coastal and urban litter clean-ups.

Cigarette butts are not biodegradable!

The butt of a cigarette is primarily the filter, made of a type of plasticized cellulose acetate. It does not readily biodegrade. That does not mean it will persist whole in the environment forever though, as sunlight will degrade it and break it into very small particles.

Carelessly discarded cigarette butts are a really frequent cause of fires!

When a conventional cigarette burns, the burning tip reaches a temperature of about 900 degrees Celsius!

We must recognize the danger of the unextinguished cigarette butt. When people flicks the cigarette butts out of their car window, the butts could lands in vegetation or mulch, and obviously doesn't start a fire right away. But it sits there and smolders and becomes a growing fire! It can happen as quickly as 20 minutes, or maybe 18 hours!

Most of the smokers admit to littering cigarette butts.

Cigarette butts are a common eyesore on our streets, our parks, our beaches and in our waterways. Many smokers admit to littering cigarette butts, possibly because they believe them to be benign or biodegradable and somehow do not consider them as litter.

Cigarette waste is toxic!

Littered cigarette butts leach toxic chemicals—such as arsenic (used to kill rats) and lead, to name a few—into the environment and can contaminate water. The toxic exposure can poison fish, as well as animals who eat cigarette butts.

THE Solution - reduce the amount of cigarette litter

What you can do to help reduce cigarette butt litter?

  • If you are a smoker, dispose of your cigarettes butts responsibly by always putting them in a bin.
  • Carry a pocket ashtray with you to use when there are no bins around.
  • Get your business involved in "Pocket Ashtray Project" to reduce butt litter.
  • If you are a non smoker, or a smoker who does the right thing, you can also help to make a difference by spreading these facts to show the effects of cigarette litter.
